Memorials in St. Andrew's Church & its graveyard, Grinton in Swaledale.
"The Cathedral of the Dale"

St. Andrew's Church has a continuous history dating back to Norman times. For many centuries until the other churches were built, this was where people were buried from the whole of Swaledale and Arkengarthdale. People dying in the upper dale were carried in wicker coffins along the Corpse Way for burial in St. Andrew's churchyard. The could be an onerous two day walk especially in winter.

A survey of the inscriptions on the many gravestones and on the memorials in the Church was carried out in 1988. I am very grateful for permission from the Cleveland Family History Society to reproduce scans of the survey here on this site. Please note that Cleveland FHS retain the copyright on all their documents.

The survey consists of three parts: the churchyard plan with all the gravestones referenced by number; a file of 25 pages listing the graves alphabetically by the main name and a card index with more details. The plan & file are kept at the back of the Church for reference.

The file of names is sorted alphabetically by the main name with a few exceptions.

However, please note that the folder is divided into 4 sections, the church and 3 churchyard areas & that the numbering repeats in each.

If you're looking for a name you must look in each section.

Please click here to go to the first file page.

The card index with full inscriptions will be added as soon as possible

The home link at the bottom of the index will return you here.
